Birthday boy Alex set to continue

Feisty Scot and legendary Manchester United soccer manager turns 67 today. After 22 years managing one of the most successful soccer teams of all time, he doesn't look set for retirement just yet.

Where does he get his drive and skills from?

His 5 T'ai Chi Birth Star makes him the Boss. A dominant and controlling figure that very few players have argued successfully with! He even chooses which pundits and TV stations can interview him. Throughout 2008, according to the nine year cycle of I Ching Astrology, his Star has been in the 9 Fire House of fame - as it was 1999 when again Man U achieved soccer's Holy Grail, the elusive Treble - the Premiership, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League.

His 1 Water Inner Star gives him depth and a sense of independence that can be cloaked in secrecy.

However it is his passionate and explosive 9 Fire Outer Star that has earned him notoriety as "The Hairdryer"! Few players have escaped the "hot air" treatment after a poor performance on the pitch.

Tiger: the Golfing Genius

Eldrick Tont "Tiger" Woods is 33 today. Already the winner of 14 major golf championships, he looks set to become the most successful golfer in history.

Does his 7 Lake Birth Star reveal any on his awesome skills?

Interestingly, as a 7 Lake Star, he is not alone among the all-time golfing greats. Other include: Seve Ballesteros, Nick Faldo, Bernard Langer, Lee Trevino and Jack Nicklaus.

However, Tiger gets the edge on the others as his Inner Star is also the 7 Lake and his Outer Star is the 5 T'ai Chi Star, effectively doubling up the 7 Lake Star attributes of accuracy and a polished performance.

Happy Birthday, Tiger!

Midnight Cowboy

Jon Voight, Hollywood actor and estranged father of Angelina Jolie, is 70 today. His epic appearance in 1969 in "Midnight Cowboy" with Dustin Hoffman set him on the road to his glittering career.

I believe that his I Ching Astrology Profile truly reflects his real nature.

His tough, stubborn and intractable qualities are a very good mirror of aspects of his 8 Mountain Birth Star.

His independence, evasiveness and desire to do things his own way are well reflected in his 1 Water Inner Star.

The spirit of youth, impetuosity and stamina are expressed in his 3 Thunder Outer Star.

This 8-1-3 profile is an explosive mix! Jon is not a person to cross, as he will have the memory of an elephant and never forgets!

Denzell's Day!

Happy birthday to Denzell Washington who turns 54 today. The award-wnning actor and director was the second black American (after Poitier) to win an Academy Award. He received his in 2001 for his role in "Training Day".

Denzell is a devout Christian and has four children. His 1 Water Birth Star gives him depth and soul.

His 7 Lake Inner Star brings out his humour, fun and independence.

But it is his 8 Mountain Outer Star that gives him a rugged, tough and stoic expression and appearance - which is his successful stock-in-trade as one of the greatest thespians of his generation.

Marlene: a true Fire Star

Today is the anniversary of the birth in 1901 of German-born singer and actress Marlene Dietrich.

Does her I Ching Astrology profile acknowledge the American Film Institute honouring her as the 9th greatest female star of all time?

Actually, her 9 Fire Birth Star is completely spot on! This gave her warmth, passion, fame and eccentricity.

But her 4 Wind Inner Star made her emotional, sensitive, changeable and at times erratic.

Her 1 Water Outer Star reveals her independence, aloofness, evasiveness and sensuality.

I find it interesting that her 9-4-1 profile is a complete mirror of actress Liza Minnelli.

Pinter will be missed

World acclaimed playwright, screenwriter, director and actor, Harold Pinter, died aged 78 on Christmas Eve.

A Nobel Laureate, he was also a passionate pacifist and his Stars in I Ching Astrology reflected this stance.

His 7 Lake Birth Star, derived from the Trigram the Lake or Joy or The Youngest Daughter, gave him a reflective and deeply concerned spirit.

His 9 Fire Inner Star empowered the passion of his beliefs.

However his 3 Thunder Outer Star gave him the energy, wit, stamina and indeed "anger" at issues that he held close to his heart and conscience.

It is at times like this that humanity needs the voice and honesty of people like him.

What's your Birth Star?

There are nine different Stars in I Ching Astrology and they all relate to one of the eight trigrams in the I Ching and the T'ai Chi itself.

It is important to remember that the I Ching Astrology year begins on the first day of the Chinese Solar Year, 4 February, annually. Therefore, anyone born between 1 January and 3 February, actually belongs to the previous year...

Here's a simple way to calculate your own Birth Star. Here's an example: both Richard Branson and Stevie Wonder were both born in 1950.

Start by adding all the digits in their year of birth:

1+9+5+0 = 15

Add them again to get a figure below 11:

1+5=6

Now take away from 11:

11-6 = 5 T'ai Chi Birth Star

This formula can be used to calculate any Birth Star.

The 5 T'ai Chi Birth Star represents, creativity perspicacity, resilience, vision, taking charge, initiative, enthusiasm and sensitivity. Qualities shared by both Richard and Stevie. For mini profiles of all the Birth Stars go to www.iching-astrology.com

Happy Christmas: a star controversy

Today the Christian world celebrates the birth of Christ in Bethlehem 2008 years ago. But controversy continues to this day about the actual date of Christ's birth?

One astronomer claims that a conjunction of Jupiter and Venus on 17 June, 2 BC, created the Star of Bethlehem.

Another astronomer speculated that Venus appeared behind the Moon on 2 March, 6 BC, creating the impression of a massive star that would have been visible that night in the Middle East.

So, who's birthday was really on Christmas Day?

Legendary Hollywood actor, Humphrey Bogart, was born in 1889 and British broadcaster and comic genius, Kenny Everett in 1944. Their I Ching Astrology profile was the same 2- 1- 6.

And we can also wish campaigning diva, Annie Lennox, a very happy 54th birthday today.

The Far Side of the Moon

On Christmas Eve in 1968 Apollo 8 was the first manned space craft to venture to the dark side of the moon. The brave astronauts that night were Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders.

To the biggest recorded TV audience in history to that date the men recited, in turn, the first ten verses of Genesis from the Bible.

1968 was a 5 T'ai Chi year- and these are always "turning point" years. It paved the way to realise JFK's dream of landing a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s.

Great Mother-New Father

Today is the 82nd birthday of American poet, Robert Bly.

Many regard this bard of Norwegian ancestry as the father of the men's movement in the US.

Do his I Ching Astrology Stars reveal anything about his personality, poetry or passion?

His 2 Earth Birth Star is drawn from the I Ching trigram Mother. Overall this brings out in him a caring and nurturing quality.

His 1 Water Inner Star gives him his depth, spirituality, independence and courage.

But it is his 6 Heaven Outer Star that gives him his sharp edge, clarity and wit.

In June 2004 he recited some of his mytho poetic work at a conference in Maine, entitled: "Great Mother- New Father."

The title summarises his I Ching Astrology profile perfectly!

Happy New Year - yes already!

I Ching Astrology uses the first day of Spring in the Chinese Solar Calender- 4 February- as the traditional starting point of the year. This date is also used by several other systems of astrology that emanated from China and Tibet.

However, in the Imperial Court of China, great respect was paid to the Winter Solstice. Traditionally 21 December was the equivalent of their New Year's Eve and 22 December, New Year's Day. This, of course, exactly matches the celebratory year of the contemporary pagan cultures in Europe: with the Solstices marking the beginning of a whole new cycle, from hibernation towards germination and rebirth, and the reverse.

From either perspective, Southern or Northern hemisphere, the Solstices always represent a turning point in the year.

I wish you a Happy New Year!

A Light in the Dark

Born on the Winter Solstice of 1118, Thomas à Beckett became King Henry II of England's most trusted advisor and mentor, but finally his implacable adversary.

He rose to become the Lord Chancellor of England and later Archbishop of Canterbury.

His martyrdom at the hands of Henry's knights was triggered by the king's now infamous words: "Who will rid me of this turbulent priest?" Becket was canonised a saint soon after his death.

The Birth Star of Henry was a 3 Thunder Star. This was the fuel and indeed support for Becket's own 9 Fire Star. But as a partnership, Thunder and Fire, can prove volatile. And his relationship with Henry became an almost archetypal battle between church and state.

Becket's 9 Fire Birth Star made him an inspiration and a natural leader and spiritual guide.

In fact Henry II sent his eldest son, Henry, to live with Beckett. His son later declared that he received more love, inspiration and support in a day from Beckett than he had received in a lifetime so far from his own father. Perhaps yet another source of animosity between the two men, who were once such close friends.

It's in his elements...

Born in 1946, the ever youthful Uri Geller is 62 today.

Does I Ching Astrology provide any insight into his extraordinary skills and his talent for reinvention? The three Stars that make up his I Ching Astrology Profile include: Fire, Wind and Water - all powerful and elusive elements.

His 9 Fire Birth Star gives him the tendency to show off and inspire.

His 4 Wind Inner Star makes him changeable and intuitive.

His 1 Water Outer Star gives him that elusive presence and style.

It is curious to note that Houdini and David Blaine both share the same profile.

"Non, je ne regrette rien"

Legendary french singer and entertainer Edith Piaf was born today in 1915. Her father was an acrobat and her mother a singer from Italy. She was raised around prostitutes and as a teenager became partially blind.

With money raised from the working girls, she visited a shrine and her sight was restored. Tragically, her only child died at the age of two. The trials and tribulations of her life produced some of the most haunting and moving of songs.

Her sensitivity and influence can be seen in her 4 Wind Birth Star.

Her charm and wit were there in her 7 Lake Inner Star.

Her femininity, love and warmth are revealed in her 2 Earth Outer Star.

Pitt moves into mellow times

Pitt's latest movie - released Christmas Day in the USA

Brad Pitt is 45 today. Hollywood actor and more recently environmentalist was born in Shawnee, Oklahoma in 1963.

In I Ching Astrology, all Stars go through a process of rebirth every nine years. Major events tend to occur in our lives when we are: 9, 18, 27, 36, 45 (like Brad), and so on

After a high profile marriage and separation from Friends' star, Jennifer Aniston, and a fairy tale partnership with Angelina Jolie and the arrival of twins this year, it is quite likely that he will now settle down. However, his 1 Water Birth Star makes him romantic, independent, sexy, attractive - but with a natural tendency to explore, sometimes in unpredictable ways!

Young at Heart

Children's author, Jacqueline Wilson is 63 today and still enchanting children of all ages.

Her ever popular book "The Story of Tracy Beaker" became a must-read for a generation of children and popular "cult-TV" programme.

What does I Ching Astrology say about her style?

Her 1 Water Birth Star makes her deep and mysterious. Her 7 Lake Inner Star makes her fun, reflective and witty. Her 8 Mountain Outer Star makes her knowledgeable, hard-working and at times, reclusive.

And this 1-7-8 profile is reflected throughout the nearly 100 books that she has written to date.

She lives in a small cottage in the quiet London suburb of Kingston Upon Thames.

Beethoven: Brilliant. And bi-polar?

Born in a Bonn this day in the 1770, Ludwig van Beethoven was probably the greatest romantic composer of all time. Sadly, at the age of 26 his hearing began to decline. However, this did not prevent him from continuing to compose and perform.

He also suffered from major mood swings that nowadays might be attributed to bipolar disorder.

What does I Ching Astrology reveal about Beethoven's character and genius?

His 5 T'ai Chi Birth Star gave him a comanding and a controlling presence.

His 1 Water Inner Star gave him his depth, soul and romanticism.

However, it was his 9 Fire Outer Star that gave him the colour, passion and flamboyance that he was so famous for.

Bipolar disorder often manifests in debilitating and erratic behavious: from stillness (Water) to manic states (Fire). His Inner and Outer Stars confirm this potential.

Reaching to Heaven

Gustav Eiffel was born today in 1832 in Dijon, France. His engineering skills with metal are legendary and immortalised in the iconic Eiffel Tower. Lesser known but equally significant achievements include the creation of the framework for the Statue of Liberty, a gift from the French people to the USA

Both structures reach to the Heavens and are symbols of hope.

Eiffel's Birth Star in I Ching Astrology is the 6 Heaven Star. The Element of this Star is, almost unsurprisingly, Metal.

The qualities of the 6 Heaven Star include: leadership, perfection, dignity, strength, a sense of style and confidence.

These characteristics, along with his attention to detail and vision, are plain to see in these are seen today in these two much belove and beautiful structures.

Roald Amundsen first to the South Pole

After an amazing, yet unintentional "race" between the British, led by the doomed Captain Robert Scott, and the Norwegians, Roald Amundsen was first to the South Pole on this day in 1911.

Capt Scott, a 6 Heaven Birth Star, tragically died with his companions on the return leg.

However, Amundsen went on to open up the North West passage and to be first man to visit both the South and the North Pole. He was lost on a rescue mission in June 1928.

His 2 Earth Birth Star gave him his detail-minded and meticulous nature.

It was his 6 Heaven Inner Star that gave him leadership, pride and confidence and this would have rubbed off on his team.

His 1 Water Outer Star, which he shared with Scott, gave him his sense of adventure. In my research I have discovered many explorers have the 1 Water Star in their profile. They take on the characteristic of water, which tends to find and explore every nook and cranny in its path.

How to calculate your own Birth Star

There are nine different Stars in I Ching Astrology and they all relate to one of the eight trigrams in the I Ching and the T'ai Chi itself.

It is important to remember that the I Ching Astrology year begins on the first day of the Chinese Solar Year, 4 February, annually. Therefore, anyone born between 1 January and 3 February, actually belongs to the previous year...

Take an example, such as John Lennon or Pele, who were both born in 1940.

Start by adding all the digits in their year of birth:

1+9+4+0 = 14

Add them again to get a figure below 11:

1+4=5

This formula can be used to look at any date.

The 6 Heaven Star represents: clarity, dominion, leadership, focus, clarity and accuracy. For mini profiles of all the Birth Stars go to www.iching-astrology.com

Carling: Man or Mountain

Carling's most embarrassing moment? RFU press release on his "Old Farts" remark

Former English rugby union captain, Will Carling , turns 43 today.

His leadership, power, dazzle - and proneness to indiscretion - was legendary both on and off the rugby field. How does I Ching Astrology view him?

His strength and determination undoubtedly come from his ambitious and tenacious 8 Mountain Birth Star.

His 1 Water Inner Star means a cool head, diplomacy as skipper, but an insecure emotional side when it comes to relationships.

But it is his 3 Thunder Outer Star that helped him make history. Sometimes rash and hasty, yet always progressive, the 3 Thunder way is to speak and then worry about the consequences!

And the RFU (Rugby Football Union) were famously to be on the receiving end of his sharp tongue, when he called them "57 old farts." He was fired from the English squad but reinstated following a public outcry, but not before he formally apologised.

Wind blows hot in the Kitchen

Today, TV chef and volatile personality, Marco Pierre White turns 47.

Is there any hint of his explosive personality in his I Ching Astrology Stars?

His 3 Thunder Birth Star gives an immediate clue! Fast, impatient, rash, creative and noisy... and that is just for starters.

For the main course, his 4 Wind Inner Star provides another explosive mix of emotions. These range from sensitivity to complete control freakery... all rolled into one!

As for dessert, it is the 4 Wind Outer Star again, served up differently. His behaviour will be changeable, intuitive and at times completely unpredictable... like the Wind itself.

Happy Birthday, Marco!

Remembering a comic genius...

Today is the anniversary of the death of one of my favourite comedians, Richard Pryor.

Jerry Seinfeld called him: "The Picasso of our profession."

His creativity, intelligence, wit, timing , delivery and dedication to exposing society's hypocrisy can be drawn from his 6 Heaven Birth Star.

His full I Ching Astrology profile was 6-5-6.

The twin 6 Heaven Stars, Birth and Outer, made him a proud and uncompromising man - qualities he needed to survive his difficult early years. The 5 T'ai Chi Inner Star often makes for a controlling person - sadly sometimes with self-destructive vices.

Still the over-riding astrological influence in his life was the the 6 Heaven Star, representing clarity, dominion, leadership, focus, clarity and accuracy. Richard himself found he needed to balance these super Yang qualities with some serious Yin... He married seven times to five different women!

He died in 2005, aged just 65, but his ground-breaking and attitude-changing humour will be remembered for a very, very long time to come...

Joan Armatrading MBE, 58 today!

Born on the West Indian island of St Kitts, Joan came to live in the UK in 1957.

Does I Ching Astrology reveal anything about her broody and deep style of singing?

To begin with her 5 T'ai Chi Birth Star allows her to mix and blend so many types of music to form her own unique style - a fusion of reggae, pop, folk, rock and jazz.

Her 1 Water Inner Star gives her the depth and the soul to visit the full spectrum of emotions.

But it is her 9 Fire Outer Star gives her the passion, the success and the fame.

Her brilliant 5-1-9 Profile is also matched by Dionne Warwick, born 9 years earlier on 12 December.

Joan received her MBE - to become a Member of the Order of the British Empire - from Prince Charles in October 2001 for her services to music.

Desperate Housewife turns 44 today

American actress Teri Hatcher is 44 today. Her charming and slightly scatty personality portrayed in the hit TV series "Desperate Housewives" is true to life casting

Her 9 Fire Birth Star gives her that mesmerising and passionate edge.

It is her 4 Wind Inner Star, though, that gives her that vague and emotional and flighty nature.

But to cap it all her 1 Water Outer Star gives us the impression that she is wobbly, sexy and scatter-brained

As with Houdini and David Blaine, who share the same 9-4-1 Profile, you never know what to expect next!

The 8 Mountain Star is the Boss this month!

The 7 Lake Star will feel re-born

The 6 Heaven Star is unstoppable!

The 5 'ai Chi Star is impetuous and creative

The 4 Wind Star is the devoted "mother" of the family this month

The 3 Thunder Star is the spiritual influence

The 2 Earth Star is the inspiration

And the 1 Water Star provides the wisdom and insight...

The 9 Signs of I Ching Astrology

Your I Ching Astrology Birth Star is determined by your Year of Birth. You can use the Sign Finder on our new site www.iching-astrology.com to discover your Birth Star. Click here, but please note we are beta-testing the site right now and it's not fully functional. You can listen to your forecasts, but not buy any birthcharts at the moment. That's due to change in the next week or so.

Below are brief description of each Birth Star:

1 Water Star

Cool, intuitive, but tenacious too. Your natural sense of adventure makes you flexible, powerful and patient. You do, though, need boundaries to thrive. Without them your life can get unmanageable

2 Earth Star
A positive, public-spirited team player, your affinity with Mother Earth gives you a grounded, steady approach to life. You are shrewd and supportive, a source of strength and support to your family and friends.

3 Thunder Star
Strong, energetic, optimistic and powerful. Forthright, frank and honest, you can be prone to grandiosity and impatience, but your lively sense of humour and sensitive insightfulness always save the day.

4 Wind Star
Communicative, and occasionally fickle like your element, you really love a good chat. Your tenderness makes you a good friend as your impulsive nature is tempered by a natural, creative harmony. Common sense blends with your artistic nature.

5 T’ai Chi Star
Always where the action is. You are sensitive to criticism. But your resilience means that you are never deterred from taking up a challenge and seeing it through to end. Your enquiring mind and determined nature make you a natural leader.

6 Heaven Star
Pioneering, original, straightforward, you are not afraid to take charge. Your level-headedness lets you take crises in your stride. Wise in matters both of the head and the heart, you inspire confidence and engender loyalty in your family, community and business dealings.

7 Lake Star
Charismatic with a spontaneous sense of fun and optimism, you are a polished performer. You have a free and independent nature, tempered with a deeper, reflective and spiritual nature. You are articulate and persuasive with a winning charm.

8 Mountain Star
Strong, capable and likely to achieve great prosperity. And you are not afraid to speak you mind. You also have a contemplative side - a need for time on your own to restore the hidden strength you generously share with all.

9 Fire Star
Natural, active energy drives you to situations where your inspiring and passionate nature can effect positive change. Always in touch with what’s new and interesting, you are proud, not so very practical, but you always see the bigger picture.

Freddie Flintoff makes it 31 today

Superb all round English cricketer Andrew Flintoff MBE is 31 today. His nickname Freddie is a pun on his surname - sounds so very like Flintstone - and his rugged build.

What makes Freddie, so beloved of English cricket fans, such an outstanding leader, competitor and tough nut?

I Ching Astrology reveals that his Birth Star is the central and controlling 5 T'ai Chi Star - always in command and capable of taking anything on.

His charming 2 Earth Inner Star makes him the life and soul of the party...and his partying is legendary!

However it is his tough, stubborn and "I will not lose " mentality that he gets from his 8 Mountain Outer Star that makes him a winner. 70 test matches is quite an achievement!
Happy Birthday, Freddie!

Little Richard still rocking at 76!

Rock 'n Roll pioneer Little Richard is still strutting his stuff aged 76!

I've watched this remarkable showman, born today in 1932, for much of my life and I believe that his fame, success and influence comes from his 5 T'ai Chi Birth Star.

It is one of this Star's traits to be central to the pioneering spirit of whatever they undertake. Other ground-breaking musicians who share this star include Bob Dylan and Otis Redding.

Little Richard's charming 2 Earth Inner Star makes him warm, attractive, even seductive, while his Outer 8 Mountain Star gives him the dynamism, strength and longevity that still sees him on the road touring. The picture on the right was taken on his 2007 US tour.

The late great Jimi Hendrix who played and recorded with Little Richard's band from 1964 to 1965, found real inspiration from him and is quoted as saying: "I want to do with my guitar what Little Richard does with his voice."

Celebrity Jungle News

Mountain Stars, David and Martina, have the stature to succeed

An event like the ITV show "I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of here" demonstrates how I Ching Astrology can give you a fascinating take on relationships.

The surviving contestants include:

One 3 Thunder Star: Simon Webbe

Two 8 Mountain Stars: Martina Navratilova and David Van Day

One 9 Fire Star: George Takei

One 1 Water Star: Joe Swash

The two 8 Mountain Stars will be among the last survivors. Their Earth nature will dam the flow of Water.

The Fire and Wood Stars are too elusive in this environment and could well be misunderstood.

I predict an 8 Mountain Star will succeed. A clash between the two of them would be titanic!

Pioneer Christiaan Barnard

Today, 41 years ago, a team led by Dr Christiaan Barnard performed the world's first successful heart transplant in Cape Town, South Africa. 1967 was a 6 Heaven year and by coincidence, Barnard himself was a 6 Heaven Star making the event all the more powerful.

In I Ching Astrology, every 9 years, we experience profound changes in our lives. For some like Barnard the impact can be more than just groundbreaking as it proved to be in 1967 when his Star entered the T'ai Chi, the 5 House, or hub of this ancient system

Born on 8 November 1922 his I Ching Astrology profile indicates a character destined for major achievements. His 6 Heaven Birth Star endowed him with strong will and determination.

His 5 T'ai Chi Inner Star gave him a tenacious and egotistical character.

But as a surgeon his 6 Heaven Outer Star gave him precision, organisation and perfectionism in all he did.

He died in Cyprus in 2001.

I am personally grateful to Dr Barnard for his pioneering transplant work as I myself had a successful kidney transplant 13 years ago.

Re-invention time...

In I Ching Astrology we all pass through a 9 year cycle. This effectively means we are re-born every ninth anniversary.

This makes today a very important day for Britney Spears, who turns 27 in a 1 Water year.

Her Birth Star is the deep and sensitive and changeable 1 Water Star.

Her Inner Character is the stubborn, tenacious and tough 8 Mountain Star.

Her girlie , attractive, fun and irresponsible behaviour can be picked up in her 7 Lake Outer Star. This Star is drawn from the Youngest Daughter symbolism (Lake) in the I Ching, giving Britney the beauty , the style and the independence we all know well.

Today marks a turning point. After several differing incarnations in just one short lifetime, who will she become next?

A new Pele?

Soccer superstars are often born under the 6 Heaven Star. And Benif Afobe (pictured), the son of a Congolese refugee, who is already set to break records for the England's under 16 Squad, is no exception.

Several years ago a young British soccer player bounced onto the scene at Everton, and after some outstanding displays, the press hailed him as "the new Pele". That was Wayne Rooney.

Always keen to check the I Ching Stars of remarkable players, I discovered he actually shared the same 6 Heaven Birth Star as the Brazilian soccer legend.

Now another potential new soccer phenomenon has emerged sharing the same astrological lineage. 15 year old Benik is already closing in on Michael Owen's goal scoring record for the England's under 16s.

Arsenal are lucky to have this tremendous young talent lurking in the wings...
